    Wow - ya can't be too careful. This is a terrible tragedy.

    I don't have any kids, and rarely are there any in my home, but except my EDC, my weapons are unloaded and locked away. I'm also anal about clearing my weapon if I'm showing it to someone. I'm sure I'd be especially careful if there were kids running around the house, but I guess it only takes one time dropping your guard for something like this to happen.

    That is sad, however I strongly believe the deputy acted in a very irresponsible way by showing a gun to anyone in his home during a cookout with people in and around his home. His own child nonetheless.

    Agreed. There was no reason in my understanding of the events to have a loaded gun present.
